Endodontics is a field of dentistry dealing with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the tooth pulp and its periapical tissues. The pulp is the inner part of the tooth, containing blood vessels, nerves and connective tissues. Endodontics is also known as root canal treatment, and a doctor who specializes in this area is called an endodontist.
This treatment involves removing bacteria from the tooth canals and filling them with a special biocompatible material. This cuts off the wandering of bacteria throughout the body. The goal of root canal treatment is to eliminate infection, reduce pain and preserve the natural tooth.
Endodontics is important because it allows the preservation of natural teeth despite damage to the pulp. Root canal treatment is often used in cases of advanced caries, mechanical damage, pulp infection or other problems related to the inside of the tooth. Thanks to endodontics, patients can avoid tooth extraction.
